Why is online marketing important?

Online marketing is important because it aligns with the way consumers make purchasing decisions. In the current market, approximately 85% of consumers search for products and services online (Forbes, June 2015). Having a solid online marketing strategy includes a fully-responsive, search engine optimized website, engaging social media presence, and email strategy. Effective online marketing enables small businesses to gain more visibility and to build relationships with prospects and customers through regular, personalized communication.

What is fully-responsive web design?

Fully-responsive web design is the concept that websites should provide a great user experience across many devices and screen sizes. With 94% of smartphone users utilizing their phones to source for local information and 84% using their phones to take action, it is absolutely critical that business websites are compatible with desktops, tablets, and smart phones (Growth Gurus, December 2015). Further, with the Google algorithm update, a responsive web design increases visibility on the search engine because it's "mobile-friendly". A site with an effective mobile experience will show up on search results above those without.

Why is SEO important?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) produces long-term search results that, if implemented effectively, increase web traffic, generate sales and grow a brand. The bottom line is that no matter how great your services/products are or no matter how great your website looks and functions, it's irrelevant if consumers are not able to find it. If your business is not ranking on the first page of search engine results, you are missing out on potential leads and sales. According to recent statistics, 61% of users click on the first three sites listed and over 90% click on first page listings (Protofuse, April 2014).

Why do I need a website if I have a Facebook page for my business?

Facebook seems to be an attractive substitution because there is no cost to get started and it appears to reach a large audience, but does it really provide the online marketing tools your business needs?

Facebook
  • Limited Flexibility- You can upload a logo & photos, but you can’t change the blue & grey.
  • Co-Branded – Can’t get rid of “Facebook” logo.
  • Advertisements – These appear on the side of your page – possibly featuring your competitors!
  • No Control – If a negative comment or review shows up, it’s there for everyone to see.
  • Timeliness – There’s no hiding the fact that your last post was 2 months ago. Even posts from a week ago can feel old to visitors.
  • Not everyone is on Facebook– 1 out of every 3 people are not on social media – many people specifically avoid it and refuse to click on Facebook results in their Google searches.
  • Facebook vs. Google – Did you know Facebook is one of Google’s biggest competitors? Google doesn’t tend to favor their competitors in search results, so what does that mean for your page’s visibility in search engines like Google?
  • Terms & Conditions – Every social media site has their own rules about what you can and cannot post, including promotions and specials.
  • Analytics – Stats and reporting tools are limited to what the site offers, leaving you in the dark about analytics.

Website
  • Beautiful Site Designs – Specifically designed for your small business.
  • Branded Just for You – A website is specifically designed for YOUR business including your own custom domain name.
  • Ad-Free – Your website is all about you and not the competition.
  • You’re the Boss – Control when, where and what you want your customers to see.
  • Keep Content Fresh – Easily add new content whenever you want without previous content appearing old or “outdated”.
  • Expand Your Reach – A website enables you to reach internet users across the globe no matter their social media preferences.
  • Search Engine Optimized – Let your website rise to the top of local search results on all the major search engines including Google, Yahoo and Bing.
  • Useful Stats – Access detailed traffic stats to learn about your site visitors and their behavior, so you can make smart business decisions.

The Bottom Line: Social media is NOT a substitution for a website, but can be a valuable extension of your brand and a helpful component of your marketing strategy. While a Facebook Page can be beneficial, your website is where customers will go first for accurate, trustworthy information about your business.
